How to Advocate for Yourself in a Professional Setting

Navigating the workplace presents its own set of challenges. For women, minorities, or individuals from diverse backgrounds, these obstacles can be even more daunting.

It’s crucial to advocate for yourself—something many women, including myself, have struggled with for years, and for good reason. Women are more likely to be interrupted at work compared to men. For every 100 men promoted from entry-level to manager, only 87 women are promoted. This number drops to 73 for women of color.

Here are a few tips to help you recognize and assert your self-worth in a professional environment:

1. Trust Your Intuition

Your intuition, gut instinct, or inner knowing is a powerful tool. Use it! Pay attention to how certain situations, conversations, or people make you feel. Are you running on autopilot or are you in tune with the world around you? Trusting the signals your body sends is a form of self-trust.

2. Embrace Your Authentic Self

Knowing who you are and what you stand for is crucial. Your unique experiences, perspectives, and ideas are valuable. When you are confident in your identity, you can set and maintain boundaries that protect your personal and professional well-being. Authenticity fosters respect and trust from colleagues and superiors, while also reducing the stress of trying to be someone you’re not.

3. Avoid Negative Workplace Politics

It can be tempting to engage in workplace politics to fit in or fuel your ego. However, playing the ‘mean girl’ game or trying to please everyone is counterproductive. Aim to earn respect rather than popularity. Focus on building genuine, healthy relationships with colleagues. Not everyone will like you, and that’s okay. Prioritize building a reputation based on competence, integrity, and quality work.

4. Communicate Clearly and Confidently

Effective communication is key to self-advocacy. Express your thoughts, needs, and boundaries directly and respectfully. While others may support and vouch for you, you must also advocate for yourself. Practice important conversations in advance by outlining key points and rehearsing them out loud.

5. Seek Allies and Mentors

A professional support system can make self-advocacy easier. Allies and mentors can provide advice, support, and help amplify your voice. They can also connect you to valuable networks. Build your support system with people who share your values and goals, and seek diverse perspectives to become a more well-rounded individual.

The Importance of Self-Advocacy in the Workplace

Advocating for yourself is essential for personal and professional growth. It starts with understanding who you are and what aligns with your values. Speak up, ask questions, and remember that it’s okay not to be liked by everyone. Trust in yourself and stay true to your goals. The confidence to advocate on your own behalf will grow, and you deserve it.
